Happy Birthday

aeling on Mar 13th 2009

sophies-first-birthday.JPG

Last month, I celebrated my first birthday! Did you know that in classical Roman culture, ‘cakes’ were served at special birthdays. However, these cakes did not resemble contemporary cakes in the least. They were simply flat rounds made with flour containing nuts, leavened with yeast, and sweetened with honey. In early Europe, the words for cake and bread were virtually interchangeable; the only difference being that cakes were sweet while bread was not.

Happy Holidays

Last week I celebrated my first Christmas. Did you know that the term Charlie Brown Christmas tree is used in the United States and Canada to describe any poor-looking or malformed little tree? Some tree buyers intentionally adopt such trees, feeling sympathetic to their plights. The term comes from the appearance of Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree in the TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Let it Snow!

aeling on Dec 8th 2008

snow-dog-2.JPG

This weekend we got about 15″ of snow at my house. Did you know that there is an annual sled dog race in Alaska called the Iditarod, where mushers and teams of typically 16 dogs cover 1,161 miles (1868 km) in eight to fifteen days? The trail runs through the U.S. state of Alaska, and teams frequently race through blizzards, causing whiteout conditions, sub-zero weather, and gale-force winds which can cause the wind chill to reach −100 °F.

Thanksgiving Feast

aeling on Dec 2nd 2008

sophie-moone.jpg

Last week I celebrated my first Thanksgiving by eating too much turkey. Did you know that the date and location of the first Thanksgiving celebration is actually a topic of modest debate? Though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida, the traditional “first Thanksgiving” is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621.
