College Talk Assignment – PDF -

“College Talk” is here to help you with some big decisions coming up after High School. I’ll be talking with various Oakridge graduates who are currently attending college around the country. They’ll share their experiences, their ups and downs, and try to help provide you a better insight to life after Oakridge.

Each of these “Talks” runs approximately fifteen minutes. We will cover topics all over the college spectrum. We will talk about living in the dorm and going to class, getting homesick, and celebrating individuality. Students will share their personal concerns and tips on how to deal with the high cost of education. We will talk about all things college; the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Each of the students who have been interviewed for “College Talk”, have done so with the idea that you might contact them for more information. All have opened their dorm rooms for you to come up and visit. Each of these students wants you to succeed. They know what’s worked for them, and are aware of what is coming around the corner for you.

So, if you have questions after listening to a podcast, go the link provided and email the specific Oakridge grad. And as always, please leave comments and suggestions here at the Buddha Blog so that we can make “College Talk” a truly useful tool in your attempt to get out there and “find your cheese.”

  1. I listened to Lindsey Gibson’s collage talk. Lindsey is an Oakridge graduate in 2005. She is attending American University. She has gotten scholarships for collage. American University is different from other schools. She can go anywhere. Her professors were real life people to her. People in class made her have real life experiences. Her Jr. Year she spent in Italy. She said that it was amazing. She had a rough time trying to choose if she wanted to go to Italy or Australia. She made up a pro’s and con’s list and in the end she decided to go to Italy. She was very excited; she fell in love before she got there. She wanted to go abroad and have a good experience. She did not know a lot of Italian, her aunt taught her some words, she brought flash cards with her, and she took Italian classes while she was there. Her room mates would speed Italian and helped her out. They would go to the butcher shop and grocery store every Saturday morning. They would sit in front of the butcher shop and eat; they liked to watch the butchers.
She made friends from different countries; she had roommates from different countries. Her freshmen year was her most diverse year.
She is thinking about staying in D.C, but might take a different route. She is not totally over D.C. but she wants newer experiences.
She wants to go to Teach for America, the kids there are in one level and they have a reading level 3 grade bellow their grade. She wants to help out there. She would earn like a regular teacher would.
She took Italian, Greek, and international law (all in English). She had classes during the day, night, on weekends. She took an art class, she really liked that. She said that she had a crappie professor though. There was a lot of diversity. She really liked that. She has a degree in law and society.
She is berried in her student loans of $80,000. She said that it’s not as bad as she expected to be she was happy when it was only that much, she said that it sounds like a lot but she thought she was going to be well over $100,000. She does not think about loans just that she hopes to get a job. She is worried about not finding a job that is going to pay for her student loans, housing bills, and electrical bills. She wants to try and pay off her student loans, she says “the sooner the better, otherwise I will be paying her loans for the next 70 years.”
She said that she is fortunate enough that she has had the experiences that she has. The best thing that has happened to her is that she has confidence in herself. She said that coming out of a small school and a small town and going into bigger cities and collages that you have to have confidence in yourself and that confidence is the best thing that has happened. She wants to go to law school. She wanted to make a lot of money. She understands now that money is not everything. She said that she can do anything she wants to do. She still wants to go to law school and change peoples lives. She is now more aware of her ability to go and help others.
I really liked this collage talk it inspired me a lot because I now know that you can do anything and go anywhere you want. You have to have confidence in your self, and just because you live in a small town and go to a small school like Oakridge that you can go out and do all of these things that you want to do. You just have to have confidence.

  2. Hei Mr. Wood do you have the podcast with my parents edited yet? ‘Cause I can’t wait to listen to it.

  3. I was doing the podcast and one of the questions that you have is about the story. it says (STORY- each of these kids relate personal stories, things that happened to them, that have affected their time either in preparation for, or attending school. choose one and relate that story.)
    What exactly does this mean?
    I got a little confused

  4. Hey there were no more college talk worksheets in the classroom, is there anyway that you could link it on the blog? Thank you! HOPE YOUR HAVING TONS OF FUN!

  5. Do you think we could get someone from Cornerstone University…..
I know she didn’t graduate Oakridge, but Mrs. Clausen did attend C.U.
This would be very interesting for me considering this is the college I would like to attend. Good idea Heather…but I’d like to find a student who went there…somebody just out of high school – you know anybody?
