Inspirational Quotes

By popular demand we have opened up a page on the Buddha blog for Inspirational Quotes. Tell us the words. Tell us who said it. Tell us anything you know about why it was said. And most importantly, tell us why you are inspired.

  1. An inspirational quote that I found was

“We have a responsibility in our time, as others have had in theirs, not to be prisoners of history but to shape history, a responsibility to fill the role of path-finder, and to build with others a global network of purpose and law. “
    by Madeleine Albright.

I think that this is such an inspirational quote because it gives off such a positive message to all. It’s like that famous quote we all have heard at some point in our lives, “you must be the change you wish to see in the world.” It’s explaining to us that we DO have a purpose in life, not just to sit around as you would say and “eat doritos” but to get out there and take action to change the world. If everyone could just be inspired and motivated enough to do so, I don’t think that the world would be as bad as it is today. We would have SO many more great leaders and role models to shape our world, who will not only inspire more people but to make history by what that have done. I think it’s a great quote to be inspired by, and I think we can all learn a little something from it.

  2. My quote is by Nelson Mandela

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

This quote is one to live your life by. It tells me never to hold back, keep driving and not to worry about what other people think.

  3. Martin Luther King Jr. Once said:

“True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”

Those words ring somewhere true in my heart. I am greatly angered by those who utter words of condolence, yet never take action to better the lives of the downtrodden.

The second I heard this quote on the Beyond Vietnam speech, it instantly grabbed by attention. “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar,” it says. You cannot just expect a temporary solution to fix everything.

What this quote is really saying is that what we need is action… we cannot just fling the coin… we need to address and fix the edifice.

The beggar in this quote is actually ambiguous. It doesn’t necessarily mean a poor man, but actually represents all of the issues facing our nation today.

  4. “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose”, – Samuel Johnson.

We can’t change yesterday. We can’t go back and fix the mistakes we made. So many of us live in the past and focus on the mishaps and regrets. Sometimes we become so fixated on them that we sink into a depression. But isn’t it a beautiful sound to hear the word “tomorrow”? We have the ability to choose our day. We can either wake up with a smile on our face and be joyus that it’s a new dayor feel agony that today will just be like yesterday. We must pull ourself out of the gray clouds into the sunshine and rejoyce that we are alive another day on this earth. We should realize that we have the strength to change the world. Who wouldn’t want that?

That quote is from a Student of the Month

  5. “Know yourself first, then you can know others. With this knowledge comes the vision for personal success”, – Cynthia Tam.

We hear all the time to love yourself first. It’s not so much loving yourself as much as understanding yourself. It’s hard to try and communicate and have relationships with other people when you don’t know who you are or what you stand for. When you truly realize the person you are, you are able to understand others and how they may relate to you or stand different from you. Then I think that when you are able to accomplish this then you feel better about your purpose in life and you know who you are as a person. This is one of the most important priorities in life. You won’t want to love yourself if you don’t even know who you are…..

  6. “Turn your face to the sunshine and all shadows fall behind”, – Hellen Keller.

What a beautiful quote. You know that feeling, when you are outside in the summer time and the sun is shining down on you? That is what I think of when I read this quote. I feel the warmth across my whole body, deep in my bones and the cold shadows that have fell across my face have been lifted and the sun is hope to me. Seeing the sun rise gives me strength, and then there are no gloomy shadows to dwell in. I am given the ability to challenge the tasks that make me fear. The shadows represent that. Fears are what I struggle most with. I pray that someday I over come all of those things and I spread my fearlessness to everyone. It is not good to be scared….it is something that was never really intended for this world. The shadows also represent the past…those old days are over. You will never have to face them again. It is important for someone to understand the mistakes they made and come away from them better than before…sadly that doesn’t always happen. I also see the sun as a reminder of my faith. No matter what it will never leave me or forget about me. That is a promise…just like the sun.

  7. “If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”-Abigail Adams

I love this quote primarily because I am a big time feminist. If I could go back in time I would go back to 1919 to be a suffragette and help get the 19th amendment ratified in 1920. My favorite day of the year is August 18, because August 18, 1920 was the day that the constitution finally recognized the fact that a woman can do anything just as good if not better than a man can.

  8. “Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.”-Buddha

This quote says a lot that I personally believe in. In the process of reading it I found myself growing more calm with each line. It says so much in what little sentences it contains. It seemed to help me remember some of myself that I was forgetting.

  9. The best inspiration I get is from the Quote
“Behind this mask there is more than flesh, behind this mask there is an idea and ideas are bulletproof.”-V

To me this quote is quite simple. There are people that we honor as heroes. We honor those ideas as theirs but in reality it is the idea itself that we should honor. The man will eventually die the idea will live on in the minds of all those who believe. There have been many people that are known as maunder to their cause such as Martin Luther King, and Gandhi. Although these people are dead the ideas of freedom, equality, and justice still live on in the hearts of those who believe.
Even the ideas of evil and terror can be seen. For those who see Hitler as a maunder they follow him and believe in his idea even after he has died and been declared a villain.
If I were to make this quote comprehensible I would simply say “A person will die but the idea will continue in you

  10. “Looking back is cool, but if you don’t look forward, you don’t know where you’re going.” -Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue and Sixx:A.M. bassist)

This quote is inspirational to me because even though it is simplistic in language, its meaning is sincere and deep when you think about it, and it’s neat to hear something so wise coming from a rockstar. The quote is basically saying that it’s a good thing to understand history and respect the things that happened before your time and learn more about them, but life is too short to waste by dwelling on the past, and if you do that, sometimes it makes it harder to move on to better things.

  11. “I’ll bloom as the poison flower and become the flower that blooms again.” ~Kyo, Dir en Grey
“I haven’t thrown away being human…” ~Kyo, Dir en Grey
These are two of my favorite quotes. Kyo is the lyricist and vocalist of Dir en Grey. The first quote is about becoming they kind of person others wont get close to so that you can avoid pain and ‘bloom again’. The second is simple but it means alot to me. I think about that alot, no matter how hard things get I just think, ‘that’s fine but I’m not ready to throw away being human.’ No matter how difficult it gets to live the painful emotions are part of being human as well and theres not existing without them.

  12. “In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.” – George Orwell

This is one of my favorite quotes. I think that it rings so true in today’s world, where this nation is controlled by corruption and lies; by those who try and deceive us with every word that comes out of their mouths. And everyone follows them, because in general we as people would rather hear lies than be forced to face the unpleasant truths of reality. Most people like being led. This fear makes people are afraid to tell the truth; they are afraid of being cast out for being a voice of dissent. Those lone voices of truth that speak out against the oppression of the people truly are revolutionaries; something that is almost unheard of anymore.

  13. Be joyful because you have hope. Be patient when troubles come and pray at all times.

    Romans 12:12

This is my motto in life. If I could only speak 16 words….then these would be it. It means to just be happy because you are capable of hope and it is sooooo important to be patient in life and that is what I am experiencing in life at the moment. For me, prayer is key to my faith. When in doubt I go to God because I know in my own heart that he will hear my cry and fufill my needs if I go to him in patience and hope. It inspires me to go on and push through the obstacles in this teenage life. It makes me say God is good!

  14. “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth can even get it’s pants on.” – someone important

This quote is quite simple tell a lie and it will spread very fast. Many secrets and more lies can come from the one before the truth even has a chance to get free. Live by the truth Die by the Lie.

  15. “we are all posed by the world” -Thomas Schoonbeck-

This is for you to put on the podium

  16. “a coward dies a thousand deaths a solider dies but once” -Tupac-

  17. “Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.” Albert Einstien

I just read this on some random web site, and it’s so true. I have another quote too….

“The road to hell was paved with good intentions.”

My grandpa said this a while ago, and it’s also so true.

  18. “It happens”

    - Forrest Gump

What words can I use to explain the greatness of this quote….

Charity you seem rather reflective today.

  19. Gandhi said something close to “happiness doesn’t come from things but in the work and pride in what you do” which has always been my favorite quote since Mr. Tates class freshman year. It just makes sense that when we accomplish something we feel good about doing something productive. I know when I finish a drawing or a painting that it makes me feel like an artist, and that I did something wonderful.

  20. NEW FAVORITE QUOTE!!!!

“I think apathy is the easiest trap
to fall into, and i think the best thing
a person can do to avoid it
    is to stay passionate,
because the times of utter misery
are so worth it for the times
    of complete happiness.
never allow yourself to stop caring.
    because feeling too much,
is always better than not feeling enough.”

HILARY DILLARY DOO – THIS WILL MAKE THE FREE SPEECH BOARD TOO.

  21. “BEFORE YOU ACHIEVE YOU MUST BELIEVE”

  22. “No flower is ever made to be the same”

    - Yours truly

This quote came to me out of the blue and I thought of people and we are all made beautifully different.

  23. “God’s love will never change us if we don’t accept it”

    - Don Miller, Blue like Jazz

This quote is wonderful. Contemplate it. And you’ll see what I mean.

  24. Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.
    – Buddha

I love this quote because its so true. You can’t actually, truly believe in something until you study it, unless you give it thought, you have to decide for yourself and keep your minds open, or you will never truly believe in anything at all.

  25. “No one would express such true words to people they didn’t care about. The most stinging words are said most for your benefit, and are also the truest words.”

    -Ah Meng
from Devil Beside You (Chinese Drama)

I think the quote speaks for itself!

  26. “You are:

    *smart
    *talented
    *creative
    *desired
    *important

and most significantly, apart of a bigger plan, in which you can help change the world. You will do something great with your life, all you have to do is have a will and an ambition….then you can do anything, and no one can take that away from you.”

    -The New Charity

  27. “Sometimes it’s good to just leave what you know to experience what you’ve always dreamed of…”

I don’t remember if I wrote this quote or not but I found it on an old, crinkled paper in a stack of others and it’s almost my motto in life. All I know is this, what’s around me, and I haven’t really broken out from this. That’s why I am so excited about going to college and being an art teacher. That’s what I dream of…

To the new Charity…you will make a wonderful teacher.

  28. “Let your dream consume the sky.”
    -GPKISM

GPKISM is a Japanese Rock band and this is from their song “Infernum”. To me this quote is telling you to not be afraid and dream big. Usually if someone has a big dream others knock them down. It’s not a bad thing to have big dreams, despite what others say. It’s actually a good thing to have large dreams, it means that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. If you have big dreams, keep them! Don’t let others tell you that you won’t accomplish them. Well, no matter how big your dreams are, never let ANYONE, not even your parents, tell you that you can’t turn them into a reality, you CAN!

  29. “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” – A Cinderella Story

This inspires me because you should never be afraid to try new things. Don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of your dreams and experiences.

  30. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.
    -Helen Keller

I love this quote. If you don’t take your chances and take adventures your not using your life to the best of its ability. If you take adventures you can live your life to the fullest and have many great memories.

  31. “One who does not know his past is condemed to live forever a child” The movie the emporeres club

  32. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

    -Arthur C. Clarke

If you really want to achieve great things, you have to go beyond what others are already doing. Experience things you never before have experienced.

  33. “Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.”
    -Albert Einstein

This is a quote I believe can do only good for any person which decides to follow it. Life is not about success, it is about who you are. I am not saying going to college and becoming a successful person is bad because I myself am doing so. I am only saying that everday when I am doing my various tasks and activities I would like to think I am helping others in the proccess and not just myself. Being a person of great value is something I would think everyone would want to achieve (although many seem to fail in this world today). If more of the world was concerned with what their value as a human being was instead of how much money they have, we could be a better place. This quote to me says, if you were to die today would you be happy with who you are and what you’ve become? Or would you pass with having done nothing but attempt to better yourself?

  34. “We cross our birdges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that our eyes once watered.”
    — Tom Stoppard.

  35. “We cross our birdges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that our eyes once watered.”
    — Tom Stoppard.
I like this quote because it shows that you need not forget your past, but learn from it. If we just forget everything then we have nothing because our past is apart of who we are.

  36. “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

    -Colin Powell

  37. “Learn the art of patience. Apply discipline to your thoughts when they become anxious over the
outcome of a goal. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, and a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success.”

    -Brian Adams

    - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -

This quote speaks to me and I think can speak to so many others because I am dealing with impatience…..all of us are. We want to graduate, well, the reality of it all is that we wanted to graduate five months ago, and we want to start college now, and start life now. We don’t realize that getting impatient can be hazardous to ourselves. Anxiety is something we all face. If we lose sight of the fact that we can’t speed up time, then we let our thoughts get scrambled….and we get confused and our priorities get knocked around. When thinking about the future, we can get fearful because we don’t want to lose that goal or decision. I get discouraged so many times because I build myself up and I feel like there is so much time before I start life but in reality there is three months until I graduate, two months after that and I start college, and only four after that until I turn 18. This senior year has already gone by so quickly. I realize how important patience is, and how I need to think about all the friendships that I have built with these people and spend these three months in quality time with them because I won’t come back after May, I won’t sit in these desks anymore. Patience, to me, is a life skill that we all need, and if we don’t have it now, in the most crucial time in our lives then we won’t understand it later. So seek patience class of 2009, relax, and don’t get worried about the future. Life isn’t about being anxious for the future, we are given time so that we comprehend what’s going on now. It’s just like meditation, focus on now, for that is all that matters, and worry about this summer when it gets here. Our lives are like a blink of an eye in comparison to the rest of this life. Appreciate it for what it is and be grateful. Our time is now. Please keep that in mind…..

  38. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain

I found this quote in a book that I recently read and it makes me want to travel somewhere out of the U.S. and just get out of this big mess that we are in right now. I also think that it is a quote that everybody should follow at some point in their lives.

  39. “Not to know what happened before you were born is to live forever a child.” Deepak Mehta

  40. If you can’t convince them, confuse them.
    - Harry S. Truman

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.
    - Mark Twain

I found them both inspirational, and almost sadly true.

    I love em!

  41. “I’m not a teacher, but an awakener”
    - Robert Frost.

    &

“There are two kinds of teachers: the kind that fill you with so much quail shot that you can’t move, and the kind that gives you just a little prod behind, and you jump into the skies.”
    - Robert Frost.

These aren’t really inspirational. They just reminded me of Mr. Wood.

  42. Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who has said it, not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
    -Buddha

This is my new Quote of the Month until school starts.

  43. “why do we kill people, who kill people, to show people that killing people is wrong?”….i dont exactly know who said it but it is very true

  44. My all time favorite quote comes from the Bible.
“With man this is impossible, but with God ALL things are possible”.
    Matthew 19:26
This quote just reminds me that God has the power and he controls everything. Without him you will struggle, but if you put your faith in him he will guide you in the right direction to be the best you can be.

  45. A quote that I made for me

“When we are born we are on a sexuality fence, because of genes, some go left, others go right, but for the lucky few, we get to stay on the fence and choose what we want.”

    -Jacob “Furo-Ukiyo” Buozis

I like it, most won’t since we lack a Bi community in Muskegon. I will have to make one, after Oct. 1st that is.

  46. “Life is short, play naked”

I don’t know who said it, but they are words to live by.

  47. Not only does Buddha talk about being awake:
Romans 13:11 says “And do this, understand the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we fist believed. the night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.”
It goes right along with Acts 18:9. “Do not be afraid, keep on speaking, do not be silent.”
So yeah, Jesus was there with us when we got a half-day to go to Lansing. He always will be if we ask and believe.
The inspirational verses in the Bible are like the power of Jesus Christ; simply endless.
