I think that Bob Marley deserves a little notice here. Never have I heard a voice so clearly reveal the story of the world’s oppressed. His official website provides some links to information and his music. You can also play a couple of his songs there. You’ll have to register on site to get the music to play. And here’s a pretty good story for you to learn a little more about him.

I never ever listened to Bob Marley when I was a kid, which is kind of odd. I’ve always loved music and when he was making his greatest albums I was in college listening to all sorts of stuff. I guess I never considered his music anything more than party time Caribbean junk. And then two summer ago I’m in a jeep in Mali with a Moroccan guide and a Malian driver, and the driver pops in an old cassette of Legend; Bob Marley’s best. And I listen…I mean really listen. And then I start looking around…I mean really looking around. And everywhere I looked; in the streets and market places of Segou and Bamako, in the backwater village out on the dusty plain, bag man in the airport lobby, and people waiting in long pointless lines outside the embassy; there he was; the faces that he sings about. And the T-shirts, everywhere the T-shirts; little kids, old folks and teenagers, didn’t matter how old or how poor, I kept seeing Bob Marley’s face. I started paying attention to the music in streets; the conversation about him, about his music. About his dreads and about his drugs. About his message. You could say I awoke to Bob Marley in that white jeep in Mali. And so, I too joined the crowd. I began to listen to the lyrics. I felt the rhythms. I played the same songs over and over again – so I could get the words right. I tuned in to messages that I had missed before. I bought myself a T-shirt. I discovered you didn’t have to be poor or black or brown to figure it out. He was singing about things that made me angry too. He knew what us “crazy bald heads” were up to, that the “con men” were always coming along into the third world with their “con plans” , always taking whatever they could take, doing whatever they could get away with, robbing the poor to pay the rich. He knew that well. And now I know why they all were listening…it’s the same story that’s been told for centuries. “Dem” do what has to be done, to keep the dollars flowing north and west, from brown to white, from poor to rich, at any cost. Bob Marley tells that story better than anyone. His music is about life. It’s about death. It’s about jah.

I’ve attached a few photos from that day in Mali in the summer of 06. Click on the highlighted word. This is the white jeep where I awoke! The Doggone countryside is open and green down below; rugged up in the hills. Yousef was our Moroccan guide he’s pouring water out for the little guys in the foothills. We had to stop the jeep and get out because a herd of goats or something like goats and some donkey carts were clogging the pass. And so I went up and sat on the ledge looking out over the valley with all them thirsty little guys. And finally, a photo of me standing with twins from the village of the Doggone people, in the region of Segou, in the country of Mali…in the land where I discovered Bob Marley.

  1. I have a couple of Anti-Flag cds and I think that they’re a great band.

Another great political band is my favorite, London After Midnight. The music is unique and different from anything else, and can’t be classified into one genre. Sean Brennan, the man behind LAM, is know for his liberal political stances, and this is definately reflected in his latest cd, Violent Acts Of Beauty. Not every song deals with politics, but songs like Feeling Facist?, Nothing’s Sacred, Republic, and America’s An F****** Disease all deal with the current state of America, and all songs are open to interpretation by the listener.

[you can listen to all of the songs from VAoB here]

  2. Anti-Flag! They are extremely political in all their songs. They aren’t afraid to talk about the real problems in America. They are also very active. I honestly believe that they are one of very few bands that are truly awake and are reaching out to wake up the American youth.
This video just goes to show you what you can do when you’re awake.

  3. Thanks Mr. Wood for putting BOB MARLEY!!!
    =)

  4. I’m sort of intrested with these political bands, do they like… take a subject and give their opinion or what?
I would like to consider myself a metalhead so if thats the general style then I’m that much more intrested. Oh and one more thing, where do you discover all these groups??

  5. I would not say that I listen to a lot of political bands, but I do like a lot of alternative rock bands that write about going against the system (SHARPEN YOUR PITCHFORKS AND REBEL!) and how messed up it is. I’m pretty much open to any kind of music though (except country and classical, yuck!), so if anyone would be willing to burn me some CD’s of some political bands, I would give you blank discs to do so. So…. help me out here? Let me know and I will bring in some blank CD’s. Thanks!

  6. I’m also interested in hearing about these other political bands. I think that we should bring in CDs and listen to some of them every now and then. We could probably learn alot from them.

  7. Just something I found on YouTube. This is something that might make you think about the war in Iraq, It’s kind of an eye opener. Hope I can post it right if not, im sorry.

    It didn’t post Sasha…try again.

  8. To Dennis:
There are a lot of different bands that would consider themselves political, but they don’t do (or sing) anything political. You should just look at them from different angles to see how political they really are. Anti-Flag is an all around political band. They sing about different subjects (that deal with America and what’s going on) and just lay them out in a way that young people will want to know what is going on and why they’re mentioning certain things in their songs. Dope and KoRn are political too, of course they aren’t as political as Anti-Flag. You don’t have to do much to find the bands. Usually you’re already listening to them and you don’t realize it. It was that way for me when I was listening to Dope. All you need to do is read the lyrics while the song is playing. Hopefully that helps you, and if you want to know anything else, don’t be afraid to ask me at school.

  9. An extremely good song:

    http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/antiflag/911forpeace.html

I can send you the song Mr. Wood, if you want. It’s the song I was telling you about that had the excerpt from Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. I also have a music video for their song “The Protest Song”. I can send that to you too, if you would like.

  10. If anyone sees Kyle Short tell him to put good music suggestions on here because he always listens to good music when I have been with him.

  11. Hey Mr.wood! I am just writing to let you know that the music from the movie Once is playing on VH1! I thought that was pretty exciting .It was a video they were showing as cool new music.

  12. All this talk about political bands is great, but I truly feel that a band that is socially awake will look not only at political ideas but will study and expose the darker truths of humanity. The truth is that human kind tends to hide their truest feelings for the sake of social acceptance. That’s just the way people are. Lyrically and musically what I feel makes a great band is showing an understanding of the truth of humanity and portraying true emotion despite it’s negative connotations. Even the language barrier means nothing if a band is truly talented. That’s why I love Dir en Grey so much. I’m sure you’re sick hearing about them but they are truly the most amazing band that I have ever come across. I’m in class right now so I’ll post some videos or songs on Friday.

  13. To Sam:
There are bands that do expose people for who they are, examples: Lupe Fiasco, KoRn, Dope, Nonpoint, Nine Inch Nails, Bloc Party, Drowning Pool, Three’s Days Grace the list tends to go on. People don’t realize what the bands are truly saying and they tend to just go on singing and listening without a care in the world!

  14. Yeah I agree with you Austin I have never even heard of some of these bands, so Mr. Wood do you think we can listen to something other than Bob Marley in class. Don’t get me wrong his music is great, but like Zack said we might be able to learn a lot from some of this music.

You think I know these bands????? I don’t have a clue

  15. I watched a good documentary on bob Marley and I don’t know how to post it up but if you want to check it out go to tubezoom.com and on the right side under lasts post it say the bob Marley story. I bet if you watch it you will learn something new.

    Everyone should watch this!!!

  16. Hey if you like to listen to music while doing homework, but sometime get too interested in the song, try listening to the oldies. That way you still get some good tunes, but you have never heard some of the songs so you don’t get side tracked.

  17. I can bring in some of these bands if you want. All I’d need is a couple blank CD’s. But, that is up to you Mr. Wood, I mean, it is your class!

  18. To: Andrea
I never thought of KoRn or Dope as political, but from the little that I’ve heard of them I like both so I might hit you up for some metal music . By the way, have you heard of Dream Evil? their song “The Book of Heavy Metal” is pretty bad… in a good way

  19. To Andrea:
What I’m saying isn’t that other bands don’t do amazing music. I’m saying that the depth and emotion a band is able to infuse in a song is as important as the sound and the lyrics.

  20. To Dennis:
I’m really into metal too. Have you ever listened to or heard of any of these bands: Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Cradle of Filth, Mushroomhead, Epica, Norther, or Iron Maiden? They’re all pretty awesome. A big majority of music I listen to comes from Finland, so I also have many cds from Finn bands as well that I’m pretty sure no one’s ever heard of (except my friends because I’m always listening to them.)

I also can bring in music or burn cds if anybody wants me too.

  21. To Andrea:
I can supply b the blanks if you supply the music. I love to hear new music. I’ll bring some blanks in tomorrow.

    To Dani:
I’d also like to hit you up for some music if I could. I don’t have any preference for what kind it is as long as it ROCKS. I would not consider myself as much of a metalhead as my friend Dennis but I enjoy it also. I have a passion for music, I just can’t play any instruments like I want to. Let me know if you will give me some music. If you don’t know who I am, ask Corey, we used to hang back in elementary. I can bring some blanks in tomorrow for you to if you don’t mind.
    Thanks a lot!!

  22. Hmm. I don’t even know where to start! I like so many different genres of music…but if we’re speaking politically here, I’ll just take the time to list some of the political bands I enjoy :

-PINK FLOYD (namely in the albums The Wall and Wish You Were Here)
-London After Midnight (Violent Acts of Beauty)
    -Ramones
    -Sex Pistols
    -Fear Factory
    -Dir en Grey
-Bob Marley (thank you for posting that gigantic blog about him, Mr. Wood)
    -System of a Down
    -Slipknot
    -Against Me!
    -Korn
    -Sum 41
    -Rage Against the Machine
    -Iron Maiden

That’s all I have for now. I know Led Zeppelin and The 69 Eyes aren’t exactly political, but I just have to throw them in because they are AWESOME! (Thank you Dani for introducing me to such amazing Finnish music!). :)

  23. Oh…uh…Bob Dylan is sort of political, too. At least he was in the ’60s when he first started out….but I’m probably the only one who listens to him. haha

  24. Sorry I keep posting 10 million comments on this…but I have a question for Sam:

Miyavi is political sometimes, isn’t he? I forgot to add him to my amazing list. :*(

  25. The 69 Eyes are my other favorite band, along with LAM. True, they’re not political, but they still rock. They are dark goth ‘n’ roll, and I’ve been absolutely addicted to them for years, even going so far as to import cds all the way from Finland, which is quite expensive. Their singer Jyrki69 has a very deep voice, and the music ranges from quiet and beautiful, to faster stuff that you want to jump around, rock out, and party to.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4oRM6tC8PQ
This is the video for their most well known song, Lost Boys, based on the 1980’s cult vampire movie “the Lost Boys”.

You’re welcome Rebecca, I know my music rocks!

    to M. Smith-Peake:
I’m not sure if I know you (I’m horrible when it comes to names), but I can definitely burn you some music, no problem. My locker is across from Mrs. Swainston’s room, but I’m usually late in the morning so you’ll probably just have to try and catch me sometime throughout the day.

Please no drug deals at the Buddha. We are trying to clean up our act here.

  26. Rebecca, you have now inspired me to make a list of great bands…

    Finnish bands:

Reflexion, Nightwish, Private Line, Apocalyptica, Negative, For My Pain, Hanoi Rocks, Lovex, Lordi, Hanna Pakarinen, Poets of the Fall, the Rasmus, Sonata Arctica, Tarja Turunen, Flinch, Bloodpit, HIM

    other bands:

Dope Stars Inc., Lore, the Cruxshadows, Angelspit, Voltaire, the Birthday Massacre, Within Temptation, Emilie Autumn, David Bowie, the Cult, Carfax Abbey, Black Stone Cherry, Ashbury Heights, and Backyard Babies

every one of these bands have a myspace with music, so if any sound interesting I would encourage checking them out…and I have cds by every one of these artists.

  27. Black Sabbath is political. You can’t get anymore political than War Pigs!

Or Tenacious D’s “The Government Totally Sucks.” :D

  28. Wow! I learned something. I love Korn and Sum 41! I never knew they were “political bands.” That’s cool.

  29. This is an article in a local newspaper about a band that my brother is in. The band is called Moorland. I am really proud of how far they’ve come. They are in Iowa recording at the moment their “The End of Wars” EP. You can visit their MySpace too if you wish….www.myspace.com/moorlandband….

    http://www.mlive.com/entertainment/grpress/index.ssf?/base/entertainment-3/120058119811940.xml&coll=6

  30. Dennis:

I love Wednesday 13!!! I have both his cds. His first band the Murderdolls are really awesome too. I like the Used too though.

  31. Daft Punk is another band that I really like. I’ve been listening to them for about 7 years now. My ex-boyfriend introduced them to me and I’ve been hooked since. They’re a French techno band. Some of their music has words, but most of them don’t. Daft Punk is really out there outfit wise, but it just makes me like them so much more.

  32. To Myranda:
I know it’s late, but yea, if you want me to make you some mix cd’s I can do that. Sorry I wasn’t there on the day you brought the cd’s, I had a doctor’s appointment and after that was over I had to go to Wal-Mart and pick up my medicine. But, I can make a list of songs, or if you see any bands on here that you’d like on the cd’s then you can write them down and give them to me. It’s up to you.

  33. To Andrea:
Yeah, I will bring in some CD’s tomorrow. I pretty much don’t care what goes on them. I like pretty much anything. If you let me know what music you have, then I might be able to let you know what I want.
(Oh, and thank you for actually spelling my name right, most people don’t. It gets pretty sad. Some friends of mine have even spelled my name wrong before).

  34. TO: ANYONE
does anyone have any more songs from Bullet for my Valentine? I have the CD Poison but I just saw that they had some more songs out. If any one does please let me know ‘Cause I think in finally sunk in how hard these guys can rock!!

  35. Has anyone heard of Say Anything? They are an awesome Alternative band and a semi-political. Anyways, I have one CD by them called Is a Real Boy/ Was a Real Boy. I was wondering if anyone knew if they had any other CD’s and if they do, do you have them?

  36. Mr. Wood i did not know about BOB Marley and now after reading about him I want to learn more about him!

    Just listen…very closely.

  37. I know some of the members in these bands and I LOVE them! They are both English bands and are trying to get known. But here they are:

    YAWA (You And What Army)
    http://www.myspace.com/youandwhatarmyuk
    >>I know Dave

    Interabang!?
    http://www.myspace.com/interabang
    >>I know everyone XD

Hope you guys check them out, they are ssoooo amazing.

  38. I really think everyone should at least listen to mewithoutyou. Download a song, search for the lyrics and just listen to them. Thier lead singer, Aaron Weiss is pretty interesting. He eats out of garbage cans sometimes and their tour bus runs on veg. oil:)

One other thing. A good band for homework is Explosions in the sky, all instrumentals.

  39. I just found this band, Luna Halo. I saw them in concert Saturday, and they are really good! The song ‘Untouchable’ is really catchy.

    http://www.myspace.com/lunahalo

Also, if you’ve never listened to the local band Pop Evil, you should. I was at their cd release party, and these guys are amazing. They’re going to hit it big pretty soon, and it’s awesome that they’re from around here.

    http://www.myspace.com/popevil

  40. A while back I found this band on Myspace called Fabula. The singer is female, and she has an extrordinarily beautiful voice! I believe they’re from Ireland or something, but I don’t remember. I’ll find them and post a link on here when I have time. They’re worth a listen. They remind me of the band A Fine Frenzy…if anyone here knows who they are. It’s all relatively new stuff. Which is odd for me, I know, since I tend to listen to the classics.

  41. For the myspace, there should also be a couple songs by Anti-Flag. Other good bands would be Against Me!, Korn, Dope, Sum 41.

  42. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=92433248

Here is a link for anyone who is interested in some beautiful music from Iceland that I found on Myspace. This is Fabula. Enjoy.

    Peace and love,
    Rebecca Ashley

P.S. Jenn…you will definately like this if you like A Fine Frenzy. Trust me!

I didnt know what video was the best.
These songs are about child soldiers.

  44. Mr. Wood,
I got a 3-cd collection of Bob Marley today. It’s called Forever Bob Marley. I’ll bring it in Monday and show you. There’s a little booklet that came with it and it talks about his life. It’s really awesome. I got it from the Wal-Mart in Fremont for only $10.

    Bob Marley is sssooo amazing!

And you only got ONE! What about me????????

  45. Matisyahu is a really good artist. He’s a reggae singer, and his songs are sssssoooooo good (not as good as Bob Marley’s though).

nobody is as good as bob marley though

  46. I got to watch a Bob Marley concert on TV a couple days ago. It was ssssoooo AWESOME! My dad wasn’t to thrilled though, haha.

  47. try michael franti. real. the real deal. not an icon on a t-shirt.

Blasphame. The real deal sings reggae.

  48. Mr. Wood you should listen to Rise Against. They talk about opposing the government, child labor, immigration, refugees, and all of that good stuff. You might not like them because they are a punk band.

Rise Against? Or is it rise against the machine? Do you have any?

  49. Hey, did everyone hear that the keyboardist from Pink Floyd died?

  50. Yep. It sucks that he died. My roommate (Becca Houseman) cried when she heard because Pink Floyd is her favorite band.

  51. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqJ6J6fQ5GA

Mr. Wood, I found this song its so for you. Its ll cool j. I just thought you would like to hear the song. Sings about problems in the USA to the president.

  52. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yydpWtjqa8

This is the video for the song “Sly Fox” by Nas. I’m no fan of rap, but I saw this guy perform on the Colbert Report, and this song is about how f*cked up Fox News is. It also involves Nas’ fight with Bill O’Reilly.

  53. These days i don’t know a lot of OUR music that has to do with alot of the world, but then again i do. I think that Will.Am.I. has some very good music.

  54. It is the band Rise Against, not Rage Against the Machine. I personally do not have any of their music, but I can get some if you want.

  55. Mr. Wood I found the video I told you about in class here is the youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TiQCJXpbKg

  56. Does anyone know any other good songs by Against Me! besides Thrash Unreal?

  57. peter-

don’t lose touch is a pretty good one too(:

  58. Rise Against! “good” songs:

    -Prayer of the refugee
    -Give it all
    -Audience of one
    -Strength to go on

  59. A lot of Industrial music talks about issues in the world. If you feel like giving Industrial music a chance, then I really suggest tuning into RIR (Real Industrial Radio), you can listen in on the continuous streaming radio.
    http://www.realindustrialradio.com/

Adrian is my favorite host of RIR ^.^

  60. I have three music videos for you. The first is the original by U2, the second is a cover by Saul Williams and the third is a collage of George Bush clips (that makes up the song).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFM7Ty1EEvs

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keqAQk1YuOs

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXnO_FxmHes

  61. Once. The soundtrack is amazing. It makes me want to go to Ireland soooo bad and to live in the country by the ocean. Yeah, that sounds pretty nice to me….

  62. Hi I like your post “MUSIC” so well that I like to ask you whether I should translate into German and linking back. Answer welcome. Greetings Schlauchboot

  63. Hi! Your Post “MUSIC” is very interesting for me. Unfortunately my written English is not so good so I write in German: Dir, meinem liebsten, gehrt mein Herz vom Anfang bis zum Ende, in Freude und Schmerz. Fr dich, mein Liebster ist mir nichts zu viel, ob Himmel, ob Hlle, nur du bist mein Ziel. Yours sincerely Briefe Schreiben

  64. Seriously listen to Poets of the Fall.

They are a great alternative Finnish rock band with a fantastic vocalist, talented musicians, and cool ambiance. Please go and listen to their CD Carnival of Rust. AS the WHOLE CD is good, I’m not going to request a single song, just give it a listen and tell me what you think.

    Corey

  65. The Cranberries. They’re delicious…

    :0)

  66. Hei Mr. Wood, can you burn me a Bob Marley cd when I get back? Cause I don’t have any of his music.

Corey, I love Poets of the Fall. But then I love most Finn bands. POTF has a new cd out called ‘Russian Roulette’ that you should check out. Lovex also has a new cd out called ‘Pretend Or Surrender’, and it rocks.

Dani Patton…nice to have you back on the music board. We don’t have music posters this year. I would be honored to burn you a Bob Marley CD. Saw your dad at Wolfies wearing an anarchist cap. I think he’s come over to the darkside.

  67. Read the translations first and then watch the video! I think you’ll like it Mr. Wood. Girugamesh is a really good band!

    Translations:
    Kowareta Iku Sekai:
Because it’s white, it’s said it wants to be white
Because it’s white, something can be blended in

The water in a little bowl became clear
Little by little the colours faded away

    Eventually humans corrupt
Humans can be discoloured by other humans
The star they both live on together is discoloured
    They strangle themselves

How do you describe the time
When the trees coldly looked up at the building that towers above?

The earth is touched by a bloodied hand
Without kindness, flowers withered and died
And by that hand, witch has no heart
The future without sins is murdered
    Eventually humans corrupt
Humans can be discoloured by other humans
This star they both live on together is discoloured
    A breaking world

    Eventually humans corrupt
Humans can be discoloured by other humans
This star they both live on together is discoloured
    A breaking world

In this civilization what sort of life do you picture is the one we wanted?
    In this selfish egotistical struggle
What was shed was not blood, but the tears of the planet
The Earth, born so billions of years ago
The proportion of time we’ve been in existence is just a few seconds
We have not aided in the recovery of the planet
We have not lived our lives in order to help the earth
However, we alone have known an unblemished love

The End is near by, but you who have known love will be all right

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49oe-AlGnyU

  68. Mr. Wood i know some bands you might want to listen to because they are against things that are wrong with the world, like Rise Against, and some of System Of A Down. Some of my favorite songs by these artists are as follows–

Prayer Of The Refugee- Rise Against
    Re-Education (Through Labor)- Rise Against
    Give It All- Rise Against
    Boom!- System Of A Down
    Sugar- System Of A Down
    War?- System Of A Down
Prison Song- System Of A Down

I have the videos for some of them on my computer and MP3 player, but others don’t have videos and i could show them to you some time, if you wanted

  69. I think that some time you should bring in some of the political music for your classes to listen to. It would be a great way to open up people to political issues through things they like. Also you should bring in all different types not just one genre of music. Music is a great way to get through to people all you have to do is find a type you like.

  70. I belive that Country music is also Patriotic people only think it is about things like dogs dieing but it is very politicly friendly. Some songs that show this are the Angry American, Where were you when the world stoped turning, Where the stars, stripes, & eagles Fly, as well as American Solder. They are mostly war based but they are still talking about freedome as well as the right to be an American Citizen.

  71. Yes, but Paul, you do realize that Country music is proven to lead to more suicides, it has been tested and proven.

  72. I think that everyone should listen to The Wallflowers. The lead singer, who has now seperated the band, is Bob Dylan’s son, Jakob Dylan. The genre of this band could best be under rock. It is unique and has a blues feel to it. I highly recommend it.

  73. Since when has country music led to more suicides? I don’t really listen to country but atleast there aren’t songs that talk about suicide unlike some heavy metal and some other types of music.

  74. It is more of the older country songs that have a sense of hopelessness to them like their spouse left them, someone close to them died, a depressing point in their life, and things like that, not most of the new stuff. I will try to find a link to the study.

I agree the old country sons always talk abouot that hopelessness. And those old country are the real country songs. George Jones, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams – that is country. NOT GARTH BROOKS – that’s pop. I agree with Jacob, if I was going to commit suicide I would first listen to a country song.

  75. http://www2.canada.com/vancouversun/news/editorial/story.html?id=4ed7bce2-1195-43da-aeab-33a8b03b1e87

    http://planet.uwc.ac.za/nisl/Students/Jay/country%20music%20&%20suicide.pdf

These where what i found in a short search.

  76. Can you list these heavy metal songs that lead to suicide? Many of them talk about suicide, but do not pursuade people into doing so. For instance, the song Rise Above This by Seether is about how the lead singer’s brother commited suicide and how the lead singer rose above that depression.

  77. Peter, I agree with you. Metal music gets a bad rap for sure. But, to play the devil’s advocate, can you blame people for believing that metal music is evil? That is the whole point of Metal!!! And, to be brutally honest… I love it. Metal should be hardcore, it should be loud and obnoxious and overly technical… if anyone who is musically restrained doesn’t run and hide when you turn up some Meshuggah, God Forbid, or Unexpect… then there’s something wrong. Just keep the faith alive…

  78. Nice post Corey….I play my metal like Cradle of Filth or Children of Bodom really loud in my dorm just to freak people out. Anyways, given that I’ve been listening to pretty much all Jrock and nothing else lately, I would recommend listening to X Japan. They’re one of the bands that basically started the VK movement in the ’80s in Japan. The musicians are all scary good, and their 29 minute long song “Art of Life” is one of the most epic songs I’ve ever heard. And they have the most amazingly beautiful ballads.

And just because they’re my favorite Jrock band, I would say check out Scanch. They’re basically ’80s glam Jrock.

[They're kind of strange, so I posted the least weird videos]

And if anyone’s interested in Jrock, I have at least 3,000 Jrock songs. So comment if you want some songs.

  79. I took some time to sit down and read these posts.
Alot of them have taught me that I need to expand my music.
I myself have always tried to be very involved with music. Music has given me new friends, new knowledge, new understandings, and new oppurtunities. I plan to work with music as my career.
The Big Dream is to own my own (at least) minor record label and produce music. I’ve been seeing myself do this for so long…..

I’ve checked out some of these bands that have been listed and wasn’t disgusted, due to the fact that I am never disgusted with music, and I don’t like to subject myself to a specific genre. Sure, I favor some over others. Like the typical alternative, rock, hardcore, and metal over counrty, rap, and r&b. But what I was trying to get at is that I’ve listened and really liked what I’ve heard.
I really enjoy the chance to talk about music and other things of that nature on a blog, with other people from school, and something for school.

I was reading a little “scandle” between Mr. W, Peter N.
and Jacob B. which honestly gave me a laugh.
about the debate over country is persuaded suicide music or metal/hardcore is.
I’m gonna have to say there’s a little suicide attempt in all music.
I’ve always veiwed country as a “lovey duby” kind of music. wheather its heartbreak, new love, divorce, widow. blah blah blahblah. and before my intrest in music came about always viewed the screaming hardcore bands as music from hell.
    then i grew up…..
I started listeing to bands like
    -Underoath ***

  80. IT DIDN’T POST THE ENTIRE THING!
    HERE’S THE REST=)

  81. hmmm……its still not posting it…..
    ahh i give up.
    prolly wasn’t important.

  82. if you guys want to get all technical about the suicide music listen to “Inside The Fire” by Disturbed if you haven’t already and i will also post the link to the actual music video by the band on their site…..it talks about a suicide David Draiman *the vocalist* had dealt with in his life, i will also post the lyrics for it
    video link below

    http://disturbed1.com/video/disturbed-inside-fire

    lyrics below

    DEVIN, WON’T GO TO HEAVEN
    SHE’S JUST ANOTHER LOST SOUL
    ABOUT TO BE MINE AGAIN
LEAVE HER, WE WILL RECEIVE HER
    IT IS BEYOND YOUR CONTROL
    WILL YOU EVER MEET AGAIN?
    DEVIN, ONE OF ELEVEN
    WHO HAD BEEN RENDERED UNWHOLE
    AS A LITTLE CHILD
    SHE WAS TAKEN
    AND THEN FORSAKEN
    YOU WILL REMEMBER IT ALL
LET IT FILL YOUR MIND AGAIN
    DEVIN LIES BEYOND THIS PORTAL
TAKE THE WORD OF ONE IMMORTAL
    GIVE YOUR SOUL TO ME
    FOR ETERNITY
    RELEASE YOUR LIFE
TO BEGIN ANOTHER TIME WITH HER
    END YOUR GRIEF WITH ME
    THERE’S ANOTHER WAY
    RELEASE YOUR LIFE
TAKE YOUR PLACE INSIDE THE FIRE WITH HER
    SEVER, NOW AND FOREVER
    YOU’RE JUST ANOTHER LOST SOUL
    ABOUT TO BE MINE AGAIN
SEE HER? YOU’LL NEVER FREE HER
    YOU MUST SURRENDER IT ALL
IF YOU’D LIKE TO MEET AGAIN
    DEVIN, ONE OF ELEVEN
    WHO HAD BEEN RENDERED UNWHOLE
    AS A LITTLE CHILD
    SHE WAS TAKEN
    AND THEN FORSAKEN
    YOU WILL REMEMBER IT ALL
LET IT FILL YOUR MIND AGAIN

it is really a sick video but the point gets across with the beginning, before the video, that it is anti-suicide

  83. just for the sake of argument actual country songs from the old days are depressing and may cause mentally unstable people to commit suicide but i know a song that condemns suicide in a way

    Inside The Fire- By: Disturbed

heres a link to the video

Parody: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QyYaPWasos Made by a group called CollegeHumor, it is well done, it follows comments left on some stuff on the internet.

  88. I enjoy the song from the movie Repo! The Genetic Opera, “Mark It Up”

  89. Here is a song by one of my favorite bands: Hollywood Undead. The song is called “Young”
    “We are young
    but we have heart
Born in this world as it all falls apart
    We are strong
    But we don`t belong
Born in this world as it all falls apart

I see the children in the rain
Like the parade before the pain
I see the love I see the hate
I see this world that we can make
I see the life I see the sky
Give it all to see you fly
Yes we wave this flag of hatred
But you`re the ones who made it
Watch the beauty of all our lives
    Passing right before my eyes
I hear the hate in all your words
All the words to make us hurt.
We get so sick oh so sick
    We never wanted all this
Medication for the kids with no reason to live.

So we march to the drums of the dammed as we come
Watch it burn in the sun
    We are numb

    We are young
    but we have heart
Born in this world as it all falls apart
    We are strong
    But we don`t belong
Born in this world as it all falls apart

As we walk among these shadows
In the streets these fields of battle
Take it up we wear the mantle
Raise your hands with burning candles
Hear us whisper in the dark
In the rain you see the spark
Feel the beating of our hearts
    Fleeting hope as we depart
    All together walk alone
    Against all we’ve ever known
    All we’ve ever really wanted
Was a place to call our home
But you take all we are
    The innocence of our hearts
Made to kneel before the altar as you tear us apart

So we march to the drums of the dammed as we come
Watch it burn in the sun
    We are numb

    We are young
    but we have heart
Born in this world as it all falls apart
    We are strong
    But we don`t belong
Born in this world as it all falls apart

We will fight (we will fight)
Or we will fall (we will fall)
Till the angels save us all
We will fight (we will fight)
Or we will fall (we will fall)
Till the angels save us all
We will fight (we will fight)
Or we will fall (we will fall)
Till the angels save us all
We will fight (we will fight)
Or we will fall (we will fall)
Till the angels save us all

    We are young
    but we have heart
Born in this world as it all falls apart
    We are strong
    But we don`t belong
Born in this world as it all falls apart

    We are young
    but we have heart
Born in this world as it all falls apart
    We are strong
    But we don`t belong
Born in this world as it all falls apart”

  90. Techno, Electronic, Anything Japanese are what I am getting into

  91. I know it’s not Yule yet… but I really think you’ll like this Mr. Wood
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnmVJSvyyv4

  92. Here’s a song by Within Temptation (a Wiccan band) and it’s called “Mother Earth”:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reGlno9aUpw

  93. I’ve been getting into a lot of reggae music lately, including the great Bob Marley. absolutely loveeee him.(: If anyone’s interested here are some more reggae artist’s I’ve been feeling lately:
    -Dennis Brown
    -Black Uhuru
    -Harry Belafonte

    I’m still looking around,
    but those are a couple.(:

Harry Belafonte? sings reggae? Do you have a CD?

  94. I know a few of his songs have more of a carribean kind of style, like in his album “Banana Boat Song”. But he also did a lot of work with folk, and jazz, maybe that’s how you know him? Because I know he worked with Nat King Cole on some songs as well. So maybe he doesn’t really have a genre? ‘Cause I didn’t know of his other works, just the few raggae songs I’ve been listening to.
Besides all that, my favorite’s would have to be Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. But I like more of the “world/reggae” so I’ve been searching around and I’m currently listening to Jimmy Cliff and UB40.

  95. I watched Regina Spektor on SNL last night and she has an incredible voice and is lovely on the piano…

  96. Here’s a really good song! It’s by the band Five Finger Death Punch and it’s called “No One Gets Left Behind” off their newest album ‘War Is The Answer’.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gcV5xMLFcY

I’m going to see them in concert on Saturday, hopefully they’ll play this song. If they don’t wave your broom at them and turn them into monkeys.

  97. I’m not sure they allow brooms at the Orbit Room. And besides, I wouldn’t do that to them. They’re too cool of a band ^.^

  98. The concert was amazing. Five Finger Death Punch didn’t play “No One Gets Left Behind” but it was still awesome. You would have loved one of the opening bands, Otep. Here’s three of their songs that they played at the concert.

  100. There is this thing called Pandora online and its an online radio…you just sign up for an account and add a station and then they play songs that coincide with the genre and type of music the station is titled. It’s really great for trying something new and still keeping your favorites in there. http://www.pandora.com I agree with Charity – Pandora is very very cool.
