  • Students will understand map reading and what the symbols on a map represent.
  • Students will understand early civilization of the Eastern Hemisphere.
  • Students will be able to describe the human and physical characteristics of Europe, Russia, Africa, Southwest and Central Asia, Monsoon Asia, Oceania and Antarctica.
  • Students will understand the purposes of Government in the Eastern Hemisphere.
  • Students will understand business choices and uses of geography in planning for the future.
  • Students will understand the importance of resources.
  • Students will understand the different economic systems in the Eastern Hemisphere.
  • Students will understand human migration.
  • Students will understand the uses of geography.

 Course Activities:·       

Students will create maps using symbols showing the patterns of population, physical terrain, rainfall, and vegetation of the Eastern Hemisphere.       

Students will create maps of individual countries in the Eastern Hemisphere and present them to the class.       

Students will research and describe the characteristics of early civilization.      

Students will research individual countries in the Eastern Hemisphere and report on the following:  Human and physical characteristics of the country, Purposes of the government, Business choices, Uses of geography,  Resources,  Economic systems, Migration ~ who and why 

These reports will be presented to the class orally.

·          Write persuasive essays using the Core Democratic Values as the basis for their

            argument.

  • Students will be able to describe the human and physical characteristics of Canada, United States, Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Islands.
  • Students will understand the purposes of Government in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Students will understand business choices and uses of geography in planning for the future.
  • Students will understand the importance of resources.
  • Students will understand the different economic systems in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Students will understand human migration.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Students will read, analyze and understand different genres such as narrative text, and informational text.
  • Students will compare and contrast different genres and literary elements.
  • Students will recognize frequently encountered words and be able to apply strategies to decode and understand new words they encounter in text.
  • Students will self-monitor comprehension while reading, as well as use strategies to aid in their comprehension.
  • Students will become fluent readers of text at their grade level.
  • Students will write narrative and essay papers using conflict and issues of plot, theme, and imagery.
  • Students will exhibit personal style and voice in their written work.
  • Students will use proper grammar and conventions in their written work.
  • Students will write neat and legibly in their written work, and use correct spelling.
  • Students will present work to their classmates orally in a clear and coherent manner.
  • Students will respond to their classmates work orally in a clear and coherent manner.

Course Activities:

  • Keeping an active journal for personal, literary, and writing purposes.
  • Individual, self-selected reading for both home and school.
  • Study of literary elements and devices.
  • Study of grammar and mechanics.
  • Whole class literature studies.
  • Small group literature circles.

  • Informational text (non-fiction)
  • Poetry
  • Writing (which will include):Poetry, Short stories, Informational text, Writing from different perspectives, Research papers, Essays, Informal journal entries
