Timers meeting
Posted on January 31st, 2009 by jroberts
I’ve been jotting down notes as I speak to timers. What do you think? What should be added, deleted or modified? I’ll post a completed document for printing later.
TIMERS MEETING AGENDA
- Introduce all the officials.
- Thank the timers for working the meet.
- Remind them they are working and are integral to a smooth running meet.
- Have them start, stop and clear the watch to make sure the watch is operating.
- Pair up inexperienced timers with experienced timers.STARTS
- Wait for the command, “Timers, clear your watches” before clearing the watch.
- Watch the strobe to start the hand timer.
- If there is a problem, step to the edge and wave your hand over the water to get attention for your lane.FINISH
- Lean over the edge to watch the hand. No guessing when hand hits pad.
- The race ends when the swimmer touches the front of the pad.
- When the swimmer touches the pad, you stop the hand timer and the backup button.
- Keep swimmers behind the blocks during relays.
- Call to swimmers to exit immediately during relays.MISC
- [AGE GROUP] May have to help swimmers get out. Use gentle force. Grab underneath armpit if possible. No yanking.
- [AGE GROUP] Move quickly to the opposite end. (If you’re in a pool where the swimmers start on the blocks (Byron Center, Zeeland).
- Have fun. Talk to the second timer.
- Congratulate swimmers for good swims, best times, qualifying for state, etc.

Additonal timers meeting agenda items:
1) remind them about when to hit the backup button – not sure but, I believe IST and Colorado are different
2) High School & College – they are not to be cheering, they are there to time
3) head timer – available if their watch malfunctions; if they need a break
