Using Keynote to Make Flashy Flashcards

I introduced several new words to the students last week. They did a great job using their iPads to make some very flashy flashcards! First I introduced them to the basics of Keynote. For each slide, they created 3 text boxes. The text boxes included the vocabulary word, the definition, and an example sentence or poem. After they had the text boxes finished, they animated each text box. They ordered their animations so the definition came in first, followed by the sample sentences or poem, and finally the vocabulary word came in last. This way, they tap once and see the definition and try to think of what the word is. They can tap again to see the sample and the last tap shows the answer. We will add new terms throughout the year. They can use this keynote presentation to study independently or quiz their partner. Vocabulary words: alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification, rhyme, metaphor, simile, limerick, haiku

Writing About Inferences

The students were asked to respond to a focus question while reading their stories today. I posted a question on Edmodo and they typed their response as they read with partners. We were so excited to see the responses appear in Edmodo! We also used Google Earth to “fly” to El Salvador and learn about the place where the character lived.

Character Trait Poem

After reading Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, students worked on a character study of Sheila. They also wrote their own character trait poems! The final copies will be on their lockers for parent/teacher conferences!

Writing Conferences

I really enjoy the opportunity to sit down with each of my 77 language arts students for our first writing conferences. The students have been working on publishing their first piece of writing. The poems that they are working on really give me an insight to their lives. They are such an interesting, creative, and unique bunch of 4th graders!

Character Traits

Today we learned about character traits. We focused on Sheila from “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” We then created a poem about Sheila based on ideas that we could infer from the story. Finally, students worked on their own poem. Their poems contain character traits about themselves. We sure did learn a lot about our classmates!
