Week 4 Questions 2nd Hour
Question #1
OK, here we go again. I think that many of you missed the point of last week’s question. It makes me feel good to know that so many of you believe in God regardless of what others may think or say. Many of you even tried to prove His existence. This, however, was not the question. The question is basically this…
Let us assume that God does exist–not that we have to prove that He does–He already exists. If this is true, does it matter whether a person believes He exists? Will He still exist even if Billy Bob or Mohinder has never heard of Him? Does it matter if they are atheists? Does their belief change the fact that He exists? Can God exist only for those who believe in Him or does He always exist–if we already assumed that He exists?
Don’t try to convince me that He does. I liked all your responses of how you tried to prove His existence, but right now, we already are assuming that He does.
The other side…
If there is no God, does it matter how much I believe that He exists? Does my belief in God make Him exist? Again don’t tell me the Religion answer. Tell me what your answer to this question is.
This brings us to the 2nd part of the question…
If pollution or global warming or the misuse of technology exists, does it matter if I believe it? Don’t give me your opinion on these categories–you are just giving me your position. That is not the question. Let us assume that global warming exists. Does it matter that I think that global warming is a hoax? Does it matter that the reports I read tell me that GW is silly. If it really is true, does my opinion change this?
Also, let us say that GW is not real. Does it matter that I firmly believe that GW is happening at an alarming rate. If it really isn’t happening, does my opinion change this?
Next part…
Can both opinions be right? Can you ask two people whether or not God exists, get two opposite views, and both be right? Can a person believe in something very strongly and be wrong–or–is truth based on how strongly you believe in something? Ask yourself the same for environmental issues. Can two opposing views both be correct?
Finally…
Restate Acts 1:8. How does this commission apply to the questions above? Or doesn’t it? Why or why not?
Question 2:
What is fractional crystallization?
16 comments Mr. Holt | Honors Chemistry (4th and 5th)
Question 1.
I’m still going to stick to my original arguement here. If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it does it still make noise? Yes. If something exists then it exists, whether or not its believed in. If there is in fact a problem with pollution or global warming, then there is a problem. I personaly don’t believe in global warming but if in fact there is a problem with it, my belief doesn’t change a thing.
Queation #1-
This is a tough one…
If we are assuming that God does exist then it does not make one difference if we believe in Him or not. He will still exist whether we do or don’t believe that He does. I’m not trying to say that the opinion of atheist’s does not matter, but if He already exists then no one’s opinion makes a difference.
God doesn’t just exist for those who believe in Him. That would make no sense, because then He would both exist and not exist.
He is still going to help those who don’t believe, even it is just in little ways everyday that no one notices. He will still love you if you don’t believe in Him and He will keep calling you to Him.
Now if God did not exist, then still, our opinions would not make a difference. No matter how much anyone would believe in Him, that wouldn’t actually make Him real. We could constantly believe that leprechauns are real, but that doesn’t make them real.
I say that I know God is real, and that He is the truth, but I am believing in what I think to be the truth and to be fact. There are people who say that they know God isn’t factual. It’s the same thing, only opposite.
I guess that in believing in something, we are making it real to us. Which would mean that God, in a sense, does only exist to those who believe in Him. But those who believe in Him find that He exists for everyone.
The same thing goes for global warming.
If it does exist, and we don’t believe that it exists, our opinion does nothing because it does, in fact, exist.
If global warming does not exist, and we believe whole-heartedly that it does, that does’nt make it exist.
I don’t think there is any way to actually prove that global warming exists, and no human on earth can prove that God exists. Only God can prove that He exists.
So I guess that two opposing views can both be true, but can also both be untrue.
Acts 1:8 doesn’t really apply to the global warming question, because it has nothing to do with global warming. It does, however, apply to the question of whether or not God exists.
Acts 1:8 tells us that we will be witnesses to God when the Holy Spirit ascends on us. So, in a way, we only believe in God if the Holy Spirit has come down upon us? That seems strange to me.
Acts 1:8 specifically says that we will be given power and become witnesses. But given the power to do what? Evangelize? If we are given the power to evangelize by the Holy Spirit, then I suppose that by seeing that people truthfully are evangelists and that they do, in fact, convert people, we see that God definitely is real.
Man, was this answer long. Sorry if I rambled.
Have a wonderful day, Mr. Holt.
I agree with hacker because i think that he is completely right when he says that a belief can’t change if something is a fact or not. It just doesn’t make sense when people try to prove a point and there is an arguement with facts that go along with it.
I would have to state that everyone is correct. If God does exist i am not going to shoot someone’s opnion down i just am going to keep on believeing what i want to believe
I think, personally, there’s a lot to read here that asks one question. In response to it, though, if something exists/doesn’t exist…okay, say God doesn’t exist (we all know this to be false, however). If someone were to say He does, that wouldn’t change the fact that He, in fact, does not exist.
Same with global warming. Wether you believe it exists or not, whatever you believe doesn’t change the fact. If it does exist, then then those people who believe it doesn’t exist won’t change the fact that it does.
I don’t know if that last bit made much sense, but oh well. I think I made that understandable…now that I go back and read it…
Well I guess here we go with another try at this question. Ok if something happen and people tell me it happen only I have the ability to think it happen. Example global warming it maybe happening in the world, but to me it’s not even though to another person it might be happening but I have a choice to think its happening or not.
It’s like people have to see it to believe just like it says in Acts. SO when people see something happen they know it happen, but when people don’t see it and go along with what people say its hard for people to believe it.
response to Hacker:
You say that a fact is a fact,
who’s the guy that decides whether its a fact or not?
It could be a fact to someone, and not a fact to another.
for example
I think that it’s a problem that people hunt defenseless animals
Does that make it a fact that it’s a problem?
unless there’s a rule book somewhere that says whats ethical and unethical, everyones right until proven wrong.
Because if there was a right or wrong, and everyone supposedly tried to do right, would there ever be any disagreements?
It does not matter that people do not believe that God exists. It’s there own opinion. You can not change a person by what they think. God can exist in everyway. There are ways that God exist in many ways. Some people think that they have one or more gods. I think that people’s opinions who do not believe in God will not change. You will always have those people who disagree.
God exists in any shape and form. It’s what you believe, not anyone elses opinion.
If you do not believe that global warming does not exist, it does not change the fact that it’s happening right now . Like I said it’s someone elses opinion. You can not change that statement.
Acts, does not fit into these statements. Reason why is because some people may think that global warming is not happeing right now. So, these people will not take care of the earth. In Acts, it tells you to believe in the Holy Spirit, some people may believe that God does not exist.
Question #1
If God exists, it does not matter if everyone believes he exists. I say it does not matter because it is ones own opinion to if he exists or if he does not exist. He will not exist in the minds of Billy Bob or Mohinder, but to others around them, he might be in their minds. No it does not matter if they are atheist, it is all about their own opinion and what they believe in. There beliefs do not change the fact of him existing. God exists for everyone, not matter who they are, its just if they see him or they do not see him.
If there is no God, it does not matter how much you believe in because you can try as much as you want but he will never be there. Your belief in God somewhat make God exist.
No it does not matter if you believe in it because if it is there, it is there. It is not going to go away even if you don’t believe in it. No because if it is there, its there and if its not there, then its not there. You opinion most likely will not change, because it’s your own thought compared to others.
Yes both opinions could be right, it is all about what your stance is. Yes you could ask two people and both are opposite answers and both be right. It could be how they grow up or how they are taught that could make them think the way they do. Someone could believe in something strongly and still be wrong. It all depends on their opinion. Yes both opposing views could be correct.
Acts 1:8 does apply to God exist questions because it talks God coming to us and how we will receive power when the holy spirit is with us.
Acts 1:8 does not apply to the Global Warming question because it does not talk about global warming.
I agree with Cody K because God does exist anyway. Either you believe God or not. He made a good statement.
well now that it was explained a little bit better, it makes sence to me. in my oppinion, it really dosent matter what the heck i belive, if someting exists then just because i say it dosen’t exist dosnet mean it really is. the only people who can say if god really exisits or not is,
A. God himself
B. all the people who made it to heaven, which if god dosent exist,
then heaven most likely also dosent exist either.
again, a persons beliefs cant change anything, if god DOSENT exist, then no matter how much you belive it, its not going to change the fact that HE DOSENT EXIST!
global warming is the same way, so if you want to know what i feel apon this topic, look up.
for if you can have two arguments that are right, the answer is no, some nut job might think that just because he belives something, its true but here in the real world we know that it dosnet work that way.
acts relates by both involving religion
Question 2
fractional crystallizationa process to separate different solutes from a solution
Question #1
If something exists, no matter if you think it does or not, it will always exist because you can’t change a fact. In this case it was about God. God is with us all the time and not only to the people who believe in him but to everyone in the world. If you choose not belive in God, then that is your choice but like i said, he will always exist.
My answer to this question is the same as my answer to the first question. If something or someone doesn’t exist then they don’t exist whether you believe it or not. If God didn’t exist then you can’t change the fact that he doesn’t, even if you believe he does.
When it comes to Global Warming, the same concept applies to it as the other answers to the questions above. If Global warming exists you can’t just say it doesn’t and actually believe yourself because theres proof that it exists in this case.
No your opinion would not change the fact that Global Warming does not exist. If something exists, then it exists. There is no changing that.
If someone told you that God existed and another person said that he did not exist, then one of them would have to be wrong. He cannot exist and not exist together. If you belive in something and it is not true, no matter how hard you belive in that certain thing, it isn’t true.
I personally do not think that two opposing views can be right. I think that there is one answer for everything.
I do not think that ACTS 1:18 has anything to do with Global Warming because it doesn’t say anything about it in the reading. However, it does relate to the existence of God because it mentions that he does in the Bible and in that verse.
Question #2
fractional crystallization is a method of refining substances based on differences in solubility.
i think i answered the question last time, but i ended up rambling through most of it. my answer was, yes, God still would exist even if somebody didn’t believe He did. He said Himself “I Am That Am” He is what He is, whether people like it or not.
same for global warming. i am going to agree with Hacker here. “If a tree falls when nobody is around, does it still make a noise??” that was a very clever response, but also very true.
One day a blonde went out to check her mail box. Five minutes later she does this process again … she does this five different times. The last time she did it her neighbor, who was looking at this through the window commented, “U must have something very important coming .. the way u keep checking your mailbox that way.” Then the blond says, “no, I’m working on my computer and it keeps saying that I’ve got mail.”
i thought that you might enjoy a laugh!!!
i agree with Caley. I agree with her because she makes a good point. God is still going to help everyone out even if they believe in him or if they do not believe in him. So no matter what, God is going to be there for you
i agree with hacker he makes a great poing about how he says that if a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it does it still fall yes. i also like that he says that if something exists then exists i totally agree with that also, you dont have prove if something exists al the time.
I think he exists but if he doesn’t then I have no say. If he’s real he’s real if not then not. just because I say he IS does NOT make it true. and two different answers can’t be true. He’s either real or not real. he can’t be both. personally I’d rather believe in something just to be safe. like I’ll believe in God because I’d rather believe in him and go to Heaven or go no where if he’s not real than not believe in him and go to Hell or go no where if he doesn’t exsist. you pretty much have a better chance of winning. this applies with Global Warming too. It’s better to TRY to make it better so just in case it IS real.
