Week 8 Questions–2nd Hour
OK, I am giving you a week off as far as a “God Question” goes, but be prepared for a doozy next week. Some of you have made comments about “Why are we talking about God in chemistry class?” and “Why do you care what we think about God?” Here is my response…”Why wouldn’t I want to listen to what you have to say about God?” I realize that this is not “RELIGION” class but does God live outside religion class or outside church? We should not have a problem sharing our thoughts about God in any atomosphere. Think of it this way…”If we only talked about God in church or Religion class, how would anyone else ever hear about God and how great He is? So, be prepared to have more discussions about God in Chemistry class. Maybe this trend will pass to history class, math class, english class, etc.
Enough soap box time for me…on to this week’s question.
Explain in a minimum of 2, 5 sentence paragraphs the pros and cons to high electricity and high transportation usage of the average American. Could we live without using so much energy? How would life be different if we used less like solar power, wind power, geothermal energy, electric cars instead of gas and much more. Explain the convenience factor. Could Americans upset their lives of convenience for the preservation of our air quality? Does it matter?
As usual, there a quite a few questions. The goal is not for you to specifically answer each question, but they are given so that you have some direction in writing your response. I want you to think carefully about the questions and respond accordingly.
YOU WILL RECEIVE NO CREDIT THIS WEEK IF I DO NOT SEE TWO PARAGRAPHS WITH A MINIMUM OF FIVE SENTENCES EACH. I usually do not look for long drawn out answers, but some of you need to put a bit more thought into your answers, so we will start with 2 paragraphs and 5 sentences. It may increase from here.
Question 2: H2 was collected by water displacement from the reaction of 0.45g of zinc in excess nitric acid at 24C and an atmospheric pressure of 700mmHg. What is the molar volume of H2 gas produced according to this experiment? I need a summary of the math here.

Amerians do use a lot of electricity. Electricity is a helpful thing to use. Many americans take advantage of electricity. I think that I really hate the most, is when they keeo the conputure on all night. They do not shut off the computure. It does not make any sense. They waste so much electriclty. Another one is keeping the lights on or the tv. Why do you need it on, when you are no using it. The good things about electricity is to make food. It can be a good entertainment, but turn if off when you are not using it.
Life will be so much better if we limit using electricity. How lifes will be healthier. We would not be lazy, just sitting around watching tv,eating, or going on myspace or facebook. The electricity bill would be a lot cheaper. I do think that Americans would be mad, by giving up all the things that they love to use. Some Americans do not care about the world, so they do not think it’s important to use less of things to help the envoronment. They are just selfish people. We do need to take a lot more care of our environment, if we dont start today, by limiting things. It will just go down to the ground.
Aw geez Mr. Holt, I hate paragraphs.
The benifits of using high quantities of electricity are very extensive, but they can be summed up to one point: Technology. The average American has to overuse technology in order to fit in with modern society. One of the reasons for this is because of the pace of the Internet. The web has eliminated the wait of “3 to 5 business days.” It has successfully connected every personin the world to one another, and it can not be denied when trying to enjoy the modernized society.
Although faster communication is a great benifit to Americans, the “Harm”,(which is still currently unproven) is said to be taking a toll on our planet. It can be argued by many that the overuse of electricity and transportation is indirectly responsible for Global Warming. Although “Global Warming” remains yet to be proven, it cannot be denied by everyone that clearing up pollution and smog is a good idea.
It is possible to live comfortably by a minimal amount of energy, but Americans use energy on such a high scale that the change would seem too drastic. I beileve I speak for many when I say “Going Green” isnt any more truth than a logo on a t-shirt. I honestly beileve that I can do better for the Earth, but I’m not going to live like an Amish chick to do so. Not only is the “Green life” inconvinient, but it is expensive. Unless we completely walk around naked, who has the money to pay for all natural crap nowadays? We can’t even afford the one thing our country runs on: Oil. I think that the actual peaceful Earth friendly live is not going to exist anytime soon, because the one thing we’re afraid of is becoming a country full of degenerates (even thoughit could possiby save our lives)
For the pros of the high electricity and high transportation usage of the average American is first of all its how people get through the day. If we didn’t have that much energy or electricity I really don’t know how we could live. Another pro is it shows how far we have come in life to start off with just sticks and what not and now to ipods and cars. For the cons of this is that soon or later or maybe it has it could destroy the earth. If we keep using all of the transportation it causes pollution which we destroy our and air and possible kill us.
If we had to cut down and use solar power, wind power, geothermal energy, electric cars instead of gas I really don’t think I could do that. I think many other people would agree with me. For me it’s like I am going to live for so long and if I can use what I can now and its destroying the earth well that’s to bad. Since if the earth is getting destroyed it won’t affect me, and if it affects my kids well I guess I am sorry. So yea we might have to go to all the new things, but really I don’t think many people will be able to go through all of those changes.
Question 1.
There are good things and bad things when it comes to using so much electricity and gas engine transportation. A few good things about using as much electricity as we do would be the fact of all the technology we have now a days. If we weren’t able to use as much as we do, would you be able to have this blog sight for homework every week? Not as many people would have the amount of technology as we do. On the other hand, using as much electricity as we do, we’re poluting the enviroment around us. The more electricity we use, the more coal the power plants have to burn.
As far as a transition over to using more efficiant ways of power, I think it could work, but it would have to be a slow steady process. Changing over would not work out ok over night, it would need time to “set in.” One way to make the transition would be for the power plants to slowly switch over to solar power or wind power, and to stop burning coal. I’m not sure about how people will make a transition to electric cars, due to the fact that they are slower, and can’t get as far on a charge. But over time I think anything is possible.
Question #1
First off, I am going to talk about the Pros of having a high electricity and high transportation usage of the average Americans. One Pro of it is that when you use electricity, you can get done everything you want to. You would be able to do work at anytime of the day. Another Pro is that when you go someplace and drive your self, you are able to leave when ever you need to. You don’t have to wait for a bus or for a group of other people.
The Cons of having a high electricity and high transportation usage of the average Americans is a little different. The First Con is that we use much more electricity than what is needed. Most Americans to what I know of leave lights on or computers on all day. Even if you are not using them, you are still absorbing electricity into them and cause the use of electricity to go up. Another Con is that many Americans drive more than what is needed. Many people could either carpool with other people that are going to the same place or they could take a bus or the train. Many people decide to just drive them self and pollute the world.
Personally, I do not think we could live with out using so much electricity. I believe that so many people tend to need it in their lives. If we were to use solar power or wind power, the world would be different. I say that it would be different because the amount of pollution would go down a lot. The convenience factor would be that they could not be able to do work when ever they need to. People would not also be able to leave when ever they need to. I do not think Americans could get rid of convenience for them selves, to help save the air. No it doesn’t really matter.
Some pros for a high electricity paramator is that power does not decrease with altitude since the mototr does not need any air to run. The motor and frame will be very light. The cost is not too high. The transportbility is the single most revolutionary aspect for those who like traveling a lot. those are 5 pros of a paramator. Also i do not think that people would survive without energy because we use eneregy in our everday lives.
I think that Americans would lose their convenience of life by preserving more air. I think this because everyone needs as much air as they can get. You need air to breath and obviously to live. That is what i think about preserving more air in this lifetime.
there are some pros to using energy the high amounts of energy that we use. These pros include, comunication, intertainment, and for information. comunication now along these days, are alot easier than they were back in the day, all you have to do is call who ever up and hope they answer. for the intertainment portion, without electricity, there would be no televisions, or computers for people to keep themselves busy and out of trouble. The last pro is for infromation, all you have to d is turn on the TV and you can get all the information like the temperature, or the latest celeb screw up.
the cons to using so much energy is how the energy we use is made. most of the energy we use is made by burning somthing. The energy we use for our house are make from buring coal and those sort of thing, which is going to end up affecting our enviorment. its the same consept as a car, there is going to be fumes left over that have to go somewhere. So, in the end there are good parts and bad parts of all we do, but im not going to change how i go about my life, i think the risk is worth it.
ah, Mr. Holt, i like answering God questions!!!!
any whoo!!
first of all, google sucks right now!! you’d think that it would have a few good links to pros and cons of electricity!!!
i did find a few things though. a pro is the fact that we have it because almost every modern convenience requires it. a con? it tends to deplete natural resources and pollute. :`( con- sometimes we use nuclear energy to create electricity. B-A-D! oh, a pro, we use electricity to sometimes bring people back to life!!! that’s pretty cool!!
it would be too hard for this world to cut back on it’s use of electricity. so many every day things require it. transportation would become even more of a hassle. just imagine a bunch of little electric cars that look like the wii cars driving down the highway at 50 or less mph. hilarious, but that would suck. my dad has one of those huge duramax diesel trucks and one time it wouldn’t shift any higher than like 1st gear so we are on our way to school going 50 mph down the highway. NOT FUN!!
“I wasn’t allowed
to play pro anymore.
I’m sorry.
Because you’re bIack?
Heck, no.
An alligator bit ny hand off.
Oh, ny God!

My ball went down by a Iake.
Darn alligator just popped up!
Cut ne down in my prime.
But I tore one of that buzzard’s eyes
out. Look at that.
You’re pretty sick, Chubbs.”
thought you’d enjoy a laugh!!
also, Billy’s friend’s names are Frank and Jack!!
I agree with Jen, electricity can be an amazing thing, as long as it’s used properly. Too many people in the world just use it because they can, and have no consideration of the enviroment. If you’re not watching the TV, turn it off, if you’re not in the room, turn the lights off, and don’t sit in front of the fridge just stitting there with the door open. And yes, many americans would have a horible time changing and using less electricity but as long as it was a slow process that gave them time to change, I think it could work!
I would have to agree with Tyler James Scott Prince. I agree with him because I find that the points he made, are some what similar to the ones that I made. I believe that we have the same perspective on the pros and cons of the high electricity and high transportation among Americans today
I would have to agree with kevin for me and him have a ton of the same things. For example we both talk about how we couldnt live with out the electricity and also the same pros and cons.
Hacker, I agree with you in that we do need electricity in order to keep the wonderufl technology we have today, and I agree that “Changing over would not work out ok over night, it would need time to ’set in.’” We can’t just switch everything right away, that would just frustrate everyone and cause chaos.
Ray, I do not agree with you when you say you’re “not going to change how [you] go about [your] life, [you] think the risk is worth it.” Think into the future when the earth is all screwed up due to pollution. Switching to at least a few alternate energy sources would be fine, as would cutting back a little on the electricity we use and/or waste everyday.
