September 8, 2009

Dear parents and students,

Welcome to another exciting school year! I hope that you all had a fun and relaxing summer.

I would like you to take note of some highlights of the upcoming school year:

*       Visit of the French exchange students (November)

 *       Cabaret (March)

 *       Hearthstone Gourmet dinner (April)

*       Foreign Language Competition (April)

*       Spring trip to Quebec or France (to be approved by the School Board)

For the fourth time, a group a about 20 French students from Nantes (South of Brittany) will be visiting our high school and will be staying with their pen pals.

By now you have all heard of Cabaret that has become the French trademark of our school. This is a wonderful show put together by the students. It includes singing, acting and dancing, and a lot of hard work. This show has been a great success from an educational point of view. It has also allowed us to raise a substantial amount of money to pay for our trips. Even though the production is not before March, you don’t want to miss it – it is guaranteed to be a huge hit – so please mark your calendar now! Some of you will not be taking French during second trimester, but I am confident that you will want to participate in the show.

My commitment as a French teacher is to take students to French-speaking countries on a regular basis. I believe that experiencing the culture and the people is an essential part of learning a language. Since the trip is expensive, your child is highly encouraged to start saving money early on. In addition to Cabaret, another popular fundraiser is the French gourmet dinner hosted by the Hearthstone restaurant.

As in the past, we will participate in the Foreign Language competition at CMU.  We won first place for skits in 2005, 2007, songs in 2008, and poetry in 2009.

With this letter you will find detailed information about my grading system, rules and procedures (see above attachments). I urge you and your child to take the time to read it and understand it thoroughly. I also attached a list of a few supplies that I request your child to get within the first few days of school. I really appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Feel free to contact me by phone at 719-4170 or e-mail at billocbe@nmps.k12.mi.us. if you have any questions. You can also access my blog from the school website (under staff) throughout the year for any general information about the program.  I look forward to working with your child.

Sincerely,

Bernadette Billock

French teacher
